Hope, Dignity, Love...
Everyday Compassion
Letter from the CEO
Hospice has always reserved a sacred place for rememberance. This may take the deliberate and formal shape of a memorial service; it might be a simple encouragement to recall a special moment with a loved one; or-like the stories and recollections in Everyday Compassions-it may take some intermediate form. In any case, it is especially fitting at this time of year that we think again about the people, the events, the experiences, and even the animals that have enriched the lives of both the people we serve in hospice and those who do the serving.....continues on page 2.

Giving & Receiving
Everyday Compassion
Letter from the CEO
Volunteers are a large part of the Heart of Hospice. At a time when many feel all hope is lost, volunteers appear as a living message of kindness and support. When the promises of the material world exhaust themselves, volunteers arrive on the scene willing and able to forge a human connection that delivers spiritual sustenance. When emotional resources seem scant or depleted, volunteeers give themselves with no expectation of return and, as if by a miracle, create an abundance of goodwill....continues on page 2.

Love, Loss & Grieving
Everyday Compassion
Letter from the CEO
Hospice is notable within the healthcare world for having both the responsibility and the opportunity to address our patients' full range of needs. Once a terminally ill person elects the benefit, the hospice care team, in conjunction with the patient and family, immediately creates and implements a plan of care in keeping with the patient's and family's desires. The purpose of this plan is to alleviate pain and manage the patient's physical comfort, to aid in the patient's immediate environment, to help the patient and family cope with their pyscho-social circumstances, and to minister to their spiritual concerns. Providing such global attention within the context of one benefit is a rare and special occurrence today.
As broad as this response is, though, hospice does not stop there-we also extend support and comfort to the loved ones after the patient has died. This assistance comes in th form of....continues on page 2.

Growing Strong
Everyday Compassion
Letter from the CEO
For several excellent reasons, hospice is a shining example of everything Americans want from their healthcare system. First, hospice is available to all who need it. Second, hospice carefully applies the proper resources to the exact needs of a highly vulnerable population. Next, it holds the provider/patient relationship to be sacrosanct. And, most importantly, it focuses entirely on the individual patient's quality of life. It comes as no surprise that those who experience hospice universally acclaim its wonders and benefits.
Indeed, the only troubling part of hospice is that many who need its services either don't know it is available or ultimately receive its gifts much too late in their journey. In a world obsessed with communications technology....continues on page 2.

The Gift of Giving
Celebrating Compassion Everyday
Letter from the CEO
The holidays are a time for giving, a time for sharing and a special time to be with friends and family. During the holidays, many of us will celebrate the cherished memories of our past year while enjoying quiet moments with one another. For some, however, the holidays can be a difficult and lonley time, especially when it's the first one after a loved one's death. If you find yourself in this circumstance, the colleagues of Hospice Compassus would like to extend a warm embrace of care and support to you as we truly understand.
At Hospice Compassus may of our cherished moments come from the connections we share in caring for the terminally-ill patients and their families. In this third edition of Everyday Compassion we are pleased to have compiled a selection of stories that acknowledge and highlight some very special acts of compassion and love. I am both humbled by these stories and proud of the impact our colleagues and volunteers have with our patients and in our communities at large....continues on page 2.
